Natural Diuretics Part II: Is Green Tea a Diuretic?

[adrotate banner=”26″]Utilized for their medicinal properties for centuries, assorted teas help you feel better when you are sick, can help to calm you, and relieve menstrual cramps among many other health benefits. Many are caffeinated, including the great and glorious green tea. Adding green tea to your daily regimen is an awesome way to fight dreaded free radicals in the body, as the liquid has a very, very high concentration of free-radical-killing antioxidants. But is green tea a diuretic?  Yes, it also works well as a diuretic, which is super-helpful when starting a weight loss plan or wanting to lose those last few pounds.

Why Green Tea Should Be Part of Your Daily Routine

Green tea is one-third of the holy tea trinity, the others being black and oolong. Created from unfermented leaves, this miracle liquid contains a large concentration of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant. Polyphenols and other antioxidants are essential to the eradication of free radicals, which damage DNA, change the body’s cells, and even result in cell death. Free radicals contribute to the aging process as well as diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Not good! However, green tea is believed to be helpful in battling a wide variety of cancers.

Traditional uses of this green caffeinated beverage include to stop bleeding, improve heart health, and as a stimulant and diuretic. Other traditional uses include contributing to better digestion, body temperature, and mental health. It is also helpful in the treatment of gas.

Green Tea as a Weight Loss Aid

Green tea works as diuretic because it is highly caffeinated. It is therefore not recommended that you drink a ton of green tea before bedtime, as you’ll likely be urinating during sleeping hours. Drinking green tea during the day will keep you more alert, focused, and full of energy, though you’ll still be in the bathroom a lot as caffeine produces more urine. In addition to stimulating your nervous system, the caffeine found in green tea boosts your metabolism, meaning you’ll burn more calories and feel hungry less often. There’s also evidence a substance called catechins found in green tea contributes to its fat-burning ability. Health experts recommend drinking three to five cups of green tea per day if using it as a diuretic. It will burn up to 70 calories a day.

Feeling Jittery? That’s A Potential Side Effect

As positively fabulous as green tea is, there are a few side effects that should be noted. A lot of caffeine obviously contributes to keeping you awake at night, plus you might feel jittery and irritable, like a napping hamster that has been awakened. It’s also possible to get headaches and the occasional bout of diarrhea, however such side effects generally go away once your body has adjusted to this new liquid.

Add green tea to your weight loss regimen and enjoy its many other health benefits in addition to weight loss!
